Three working ways to reach 0.00 before a region change — spend it yourself, drain it with small purchases, or ask Apple Support — with an honest look at what each one costs you.

What clearing the balance means

Clearing the balance means bringing store credit to 0.00. It's a hard requirement for changing country: while a single cent sits there, the switch won't go through.

Accept one thing up front: App Store credit isn't refunded in cash, except where the law says otherwise. So the best outcome isn't giving the leftover up — it's spending it on something you'd want anyway. Three methods follow, from the most economical to the simplest.

Method 1: spend it yourself

If you have a working card issued in your account's country, this is trivial:

  1. Pick something priced above your leftoverAn app, an in-app purchase or a subscription costing more than the balance.
  2. PayThe whole credit is consumed first, the difference goes to the card, and the balance becomes 0.00.
Downside

You pay the difference out of pocket and have no control over how neatly the balance lands on zero. Best when you wanted the purchase anyway.

Method 2: drain it with small purchases

The idea is to spend exactly what's on the balance using small purchases, so the overspend is zero or close to it. By hand this is awkward: cheap items are scarce and the arithmetic is fiddly. That's the part a utility automates.

iOS · utility

An iOS utility with 31 in-app purchase denominations, from $0.29 to $2.69. You enter the leftover and the calculator picks the combination that lands closest to it, spending the balance with as little overspend as possible. At or above the smallest denomination the credit covers it with no card; below that, a card top-up or Apple Support finishes the job.

Method 3: Apple Support

If there's nothing left to spend — the leftover is under the minimum purchase price and you have no card — Apple Support can write it off.

  1. Contact Supportsupport.apple.com or the Apple Support app → Apple Account, subscriptions and purchases → chat or call.
  2. Ask them to zero the balanceExplain that the leftover blocks a country change and can't be spent.
  3. Or use the formIf chat isn't available, the Media Services contact form works.

What to say to the advisor, how long it takes and why it doesn't work for everyone is covered in how to get Apple Support to clear your balance.

Downside

You lose the money: this is a write-off, not a refund. In exchange it costs no effort and works when spending the leftover is impossible.

Once the balance reads 0.00, cancel any active subscriptions and move on to the country switch. The steps are in how to change your Apple ID region, and which country to pick is in which countries are cheapest.

FAQ

What's the fastest way to clear the balance?

With a card: buy something priced above your leftover. The credit is spent first, the difference goes to the card, and the balance hits zero immediately. Without a card: small purchases or Apple Support.

Can I clear the balance without a card?

Yes, as long as the leftover is at least as large as the cheapest purchase available — then it can be spent entirely from credit. Below that, Apple Support writes it off.

Do I get the money back?

No, except where the law of your jurisdiction requires it. That's why spending the leftover beats having it written off.

Can I change region immediately after hitting zero?

Yes, provided subscriptions are cancelled and no refunds or pre-orders are still open. Otherwise the button stays greyed out.
