How to get Apple Support to clear your balance

Apple's official route: an advisor sees the leftover and writes it off on request. Free, no purchases needed — but it doesn't work for everyone.

Where to find the right section

There's no "clear balance" item in iPhone settings — the procedure is only reachable through Apple's support site.

1. Open the Apple Support site.
2. Find the section covering your Apple Account.
3. Inside it, choose the topic for other account questions.
4. There you'll find a separate topic about clearing the Apple Account balance.
5. Pick how to get in touch: chat or a callback.

If the section won't open or the page errors out, the cause is usually your region.

What to say to the advisor

Support answers in the language of the country your account belongs to. One message on point is enough: say hello, give the exact leftover, explain that you can't use it and that it's blocking a country change, and ask them to write it off.

Keep at hand:

• the exact amount down to the cent — the advisor will check it against their side;
• the email your Apple Account is registered to;
• access to a device signed in to that account, in case they verify your identity.

It usually takes a single conversation. The balance goes to zero within minutes of confirmation.

Why it doesn't work for everyone

Region. Support chat isn't available everywhere, and for some accounts it won't open at all.

Language. The service language follows the country of the account rather than the language of your phone. You only end up in a foreign language if you contact a store that isn't yours.

Waiting. Anywhere from a couple of minutes to half an hour in the queue, plus the conversation itself.

Amount threshold. Advisors often ask you to bring the leftover down yourself — to under one dollar — and only then write off the tail.

If they ask you to reduce the leftover

This is the most common fork in the road. You need to spend most of the balance and leave less than a dollar on it.

If you have a working card for the account's country, buy something priced above the leftover: the difference goes to the card and you won't need Support at all.

Without a card you have to assemble purchases that fit the amount. By hand that's trial and error, because App Store prices come in fixed steps that differ per country.
